THE SCREAMING JETS INVADE TASMANIA
Review written by: Mark Harse
Australia's premier rock band launched a lightning raid on the Apple Isle, during the late hours of 21 and 22 November.
Touring to launch their new album " DO YA" the Jets unleashed their prodigious talent upon an audience that had clearly been starved of "Drums and guitars" for some time.
This is the Jets first album tour since founding member Grant Walmsley chose to leave the band and pursue his own musical interests, and some of the fans were openly wondering at the start of the Hobart gig "Have the Jets still got it?"
Nearly two hours later, no-one was asking that question. Not only do the Jets still have "it", they have more of "it" than ever before!
From the time that Izzy slammed the first chord of the night, it was clear this was an invigorated, supercharged, dangerous incarnation of a rock band that has been laying punters to waste from one side of Oz to the other for more than 18 years.
Izzy opened fire with some stunning guitar work as the band charged straight into songs from the new album. No taking the soft option of warming the crowd up with some favorites from previous recordings, this was straight in your face "Here's our new stuff, get into it!" And get into it they did, with tracks like "141", "Supersize" and the title track "Do Ya" drilling themselves into the crowd's consciousness, and proving that Screaming Jets songwriting still demands maximum attention in a music scene that is overcrowded with disposable tripe being passed off as talent.
But it is the way the Jets play that elevates them far above the pretenders. Anyone who has ever wanted to see and hear how to play a rock bass guitar need only push their way to the front of the stage and watch Paul Woseen put on a master class whenever the Jets play. One minute he is doing runs and putting on an almost virtuoso jazz performance, the next he is thumping the guts out of his bass, prowling like an angry soldier with a .50 caliber machine gun looking for something, anything, to cut to shreds.
Micki Sayers on drums just about has people ducking for cover, like mortar shells coming out of the tree line. But he is not all crash and bash, far from it. More like a supremely talented wild child that has suddenly discovered that banging pots and pans together is not only fun, but that he is damn good at it too!
Izzy and Scotty Kingman on guitar trade licks, lead breaks and general mayhem between in them in a way that you will not find outside of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. The sheer joy they exhibit, and the incredible rock guitar they play together can't be just heard, it needs to be experienced, for it is a living, breathing animal. And if anyone still thinks Scotty is the "new guy" or isn't a real "Jet", then get your arse down the front when he rips into " Needle" or "Tunnel". Kingman is the epitome of a rock guitarist, lean, hungry looking, and just wants to play!
Izzy is relishing the freedom as the Jets theoretical lead guitarist, and long time fans have seen him come out of his skin and grab gigs by the balls and run with them! More than ever, Izzy is to the Jets what Napalm is to jungle warfare!
Dave Gleeson is, and has been for some time Australia's best rock front man. Cajoling, teasing, confronting, Gleeson has simply gotten better as time goes on. Capable of peeling paint off the walls with powerhouse vocals, Dave shows a gentler, mellow side on 'Mary Jane" from the new album. There is still no-one that works harder on stage, literally putting his body on the line in the pursuit of the ultimate gig.
The Screaming Jets destroyed Tasmania, and are off touring across the country. Knowing their appetite for live performances, there is no doubt that they will be in your town, your pub, or damn close to it! Get there, see them, experience rock they way it should be.
The Screaming Jets aren't back, they never left!!
